Materials Matter: What Goes into a Chapman Bag

"A bag is only as good as what it’s made from."

At Chapman, materials aren’t just components, they’re the beginning of the story. Every buckle, strap, and stitch is selected with intention, because the strength, character and longevity of a bag depend on what goes into it.

That’s why we source our materials with great care, favouring British suppliers wherever possible, and only looking further afield when the very best lies beyond our borders.

That’s why we source our materials with care, using British-made canvas, webbing and brass fittings wherever possible, and Italian vegetable-tanned leather chosen for its durability and rich character.

Our canvas is dyed, proofed, woven and bonded in the UK. It’s tough, weather-resistant and designed to hold its shape over time. Our webbing straps come from British mills with decades of experience, and our solid brass hardware is made to last a lifetime.

As for our leather? We use Italian hides from family-run tanneries, where traditional techniques give each hide a distinctive finish. It’s the only material we source from outside the UK, and for good reason. This leather ages beautifully, softens with use, and complements our British-made components perfectly.

When you choose a Chapman bag, you're investing in more than style, you're investing in materials that are meant to last. Every detail is chosen not just for how it looks, but for how it performs.

We believe in making bags that don’t just accompany you - they endure with you.
