From Workshop to Garden: The Story Behind Our Gardening Collection

Rooted in the Garden

There’s something timeless about the British garden.

The quiet ritual of early mornings outdoors, hands in the soil, baskets filling slowly with cut flowers and homegrown produce, it’s a way of life built on patience, craftsmanship, and an appreciation for the details. Those same values have always sat at the heart of Chapman.

This year, we’re bringing those worlds together after a very successful launch at Chelsea Flower Show. We would like to introduce our new gardening range.

Created as a limited-edition release exclusively for the show, the collection is a celebration of British craftsmanship, countryside living, and thoughtfully made pieces designed to be used, loved, and passed on. Combining practical utility with refined design, each piece has been made to accompany life outdoors, whether spent in the garden, greenhouse, allotment, or simply everyday life.

From the Countryside to the Garden

For decades, Chapman has created bags designed for outdoor living. From travel and shooting bags to everyday companions, our approach has always centred around durability, functionality, and timeless design.

A gardening range felt like a natural next step.

Gardening shares so much with Chapman’s heritage, a respect for craftsmanship, an understanding that well-made things should improve with age, and an appreciation for slower, more intentional living. Much like tending a garden, the process of making each Chapman piece takes patience, skill, and care.

Launching the collection at the Chelsea Flower Show felt especially meaningful. It is a place that celebrates not only gardens themselves, but the craftsmanship, creativity, and tradition behind them.

Inspired by British Wildflowers

At the heart of the collection is a bespoke floral print, paired with contrasting green waxed cotton cloth.

The artwork takes inspiration from British wildflowers and the landscapes that surround Chapman’s home in Cumbria. Delicate bluebells, daisies, and native florals are woven throughout the design, alongside the Grass-of-Parnassus, the official county flower of Cumberland.

That connection to Cumbria feels particularly important to the collection. The surrounding countryside has long shaped Chapman’s identity, influencing both the materials we use and the way we approach design.

Every flower within the print began as a hand-drawn illustration before being digitally layered together into the final pattern. The process allowed the artwork to retain a softness and individuality that reflects the handmade nature of the collection itself.

The colour palette was chosen carefully to mirror the tones of British gardens and hedgerows, rich greens balanced with soft florals and natural earthy tones. Combined with traditional waxed cotton, the result feels distinctly British, practical, and timeless.

Designed for Life Outdoors

The collection introduces four new pieces, each created with functionality and longevity in mind.

Chelsea Floral Harvest Bag

Crafted from our printed floral waxed cotton, the Harvest Bag is lined with waterproof nylon and finished with Italian vegetable-tanned leather handles and refined leather binding. Designed for gathering flowers, vegetables, or everyday essentials, it is practical enough for daily use while remaining beautifully understated.

Chelsea Floral Gardening Bag

A true gardening companion, the Gardening Bag features multiple pockets for tools and essentials. Made from a combination of floral printed waxed cotton and contrasting green heavy-duty waxed cotton, it is finished with a vegetable-tanned leather handle and leather trim for durability and structure.

Chelsea Floral Garden Kneeler

Designed to bring comfort to time spent outdoors, the Garden Kneeler combines practicality with craftsmanship. Made from floral waxed cotton with a waterproof nylon base and leather handle, it is lightweight, durable, and easy to carry around the garden.

Chelsea Floral Tote

The Floral Tote is designed as an everyday companion, a timeless silhouette complete with an outer pouch pocket and crafted from our printed floral waxed cotton. Versatile and understated, it transitions seamlessly from garden to town.

Alongside the gardening collection, we are also introducing a limited run of signature Chapman styles featuring a floral organic cotton lining. These include the Saddle Bag, Tweed Bag, Ladies Leather Backpack, and a small number of our new Madeleine Bucket Bag.

Made in Britain

Every piece in the collection is handcrafted by our team in Cumbria.

The bags are made using waxed cotton from Halley Stevensons, one of Britain’s most respected fabric mills, known for producing exceptional waxed cloth with remarkable durability and character. Chosen for its weather resistance and ability to age beautifully over time, the fabric develops a unique patina through years of use.

Combined with Italian vegetable-tanned leather and carefully considered construction, the result is a collection built not simply for one season, but for many years of gardening and outdoor living to come.

Practicality remains central throughout the range: waterproof linings, reinforced bases, functional pockets, and durable materials ensure the bags perform exceptionally well in everyday use. Yet equally important is their aesthetic versatility, pieces designed to feel as appropriate in the home or town as they do amongst flower beds and greenhouses.

A Slower Approach to Living

Ultimately, the collection is a celebration of craftsmanship, gardening, and a slower, more intentional way of living. In a world increasingly driven by disposability, Chapman continues to champion products made with care, pieces designed to be repaired, reused, and treasured over time.

Following a wonderful week at the Chelsea Flower Show, we would like to thank all those who visited the stand and discovered the collection in person. We hope to see you again soon.
