From Field to Town: The Story of Chapman Bags
It all began in the field.
Founded in 1984 by John Chapman, our journey started with a clear purpose: to make robust, reliable bags for fishing and shooting, the kind that could handle the rugged beauty of the British countryside. Handcrafted in Cumbria, our early designs were all about practicality, built to serve those who spent time in the great outdoors.
But good design travels.
As our reputation for quality and durability grew, so did the demand for Chapman bags beyond the riverbank and shooting field. Customers began carrying their bags on weekend escapes, into town, and across continents. What started as a field bag became an everyday essential, appreciated not just for its function, but for its unmistakably British character.
Over time, our collection evolved. While we continue to make traditional field bags with pride, we now offer a full range of British-made luggage, backpacks, and accessories, all handcrafted by a small, skilled team in our Carlisle workshop. Every bag is designed with the same care and attention to detail that defined our earliest days, blending timeless style with practical purpose.
At Chapman, we believe a well-made bag should last a lifetime. That’s why we carefully source durable canvas, strong webbing, solid brass fittings, and beautiful Italian leather to craft products that age gracefully and serve faithfully.
In 2024, we proudly celebrated 40 years of British craftsmanship, four decades of making bags that are built to be carried, lived with, and relied upon.
Whether you’re heading into the hills, navigating daily life, or planning your next escape, there’s a Chapman bag ready to go with you, from field to town, and everywhere in between.
